Final reflective essayTeaching class at UNCG/SP 23 KIN 110 2023. 4. 26. 22:14
Students' essay about their learning in KIN110.
(by the guidance of this instruction)From the beginning of the course, I knew it would be different than any other course activity I've taken. Although this class was an 8 am activity course, instructor Lee made this class enjoyable as well as stimulating from start to end. From the warm-ups to the drills exercises, instructor Lee ensured we were constantly moving and learning the game of ultimate frisbee. I enjoyed the drills and warm-ups, specifically because they were a good energizer for the rest of my days.
In my experience, I have played Ultimate a few times, but I only had an in-depth understanding of the game once I took this course. The most valuable part of the course for me was when we went over the rules and the spirit of the game. One main point I realized in the class is there were no official/ designated referees or facilitators of the game, which left the integrity of the game in the hands of the teams. That's one of the main points of the "Spirit of the Game" document. For example, if the frisbee is thrown out of bounds and caught right outside of the in-zone, it is up to the team to hold themselves accountable and continue playing from the correct spot.
To start, this class was very beneficial to my overall health and knowledge of the game and other sports. My experience with this class was very amazing and fun to be a part of a great group of people as I learned many new skills that I did not know before this class. I got to play in a new sport with new people as we all were learning together to get better at Ultimate. I have thought a lot about playing ultimate for an actual team because of my experiences within this class. These experiences have benefited my future by showing me a new world of sports and teaching me skills to play ultimate with other people in the near future. I really just want to thank you Mr. Lee, for providing energy and a fun class in the mornings when I don't really want to do anything period. My experience with you has been amazing and has shown me that great people are all around me in my future, I just have to find them. It has been an honor to be a part of your class and giving us the opportunity to expand our horizons has been amazing. Thank you as this experience was life-changing.
This semester I enrolled in Ultimate Frisbee to complete my final activity course requirement. I had never played Ultimate before and did not know much about how it was played prior to the course so I did not know what to expect, In fact, I only chose it because of the time it was offered at. However, I found the game to be very fun and am glad I chose to take it. I enjoyed the 2nd session of the course where the instruction focused on playing the game and I understand why and how we worked up to that point. I believe I will go on to use the skills and knowledge gained from this course in my recreational time and in my professional and academic career. I can now show other people how to play this game and explain the rules to them. I also developed teamwork and leadership skills by trying to lead the class in the final session of the course. I can continue to use those skills in my future courses and jobs with people I need to corroborate with. I noticed the progression of our learning of the game and the purpose of the previous instructions in relation to sequential classes such as the first session preparing the class to develop skills and a foundation for the game to be played with. Overall I had a great and fun experience taking this course and can take away learning with me. Thank you.
I had great experiences in Ultimate and would definitely recommend the class to others to take. The class was very structured and I felt that I was able to grow and see my growth from beginning to end. I like how I was able to teach my peers at the end of the course as well it gave me the opportunity for us to use what we learned to teach others. The main thought that constantly came to my mind is wow I have grown so much since the beginning. At first, me throwing the frisbee was not working at all but as we continued to practice and learn new techniques I found what worked best for me.
How I expect my learning will benefit my future is I can utilize what I learned to continue to stay active and teach others. I think that this is a good sport to continue to use whether on a team or not. I also think learning about the spirit of the game will also benefit my future because the spirit of the game is really about staying honest and true to the game. That concept is something that you can really utilize throughout life.
Overall I really enjoyed this class and how it was structured. The organization of not only the professor but the content was definitely easy to follow and made it fun. I liked how the professor took the time to learn our names and personalities and really connected with all of us. Being apart of this class was such a great experience and actually one of the best classes I have taken.
When I first registered for this class, I didn’t really expect much coming out from it. I didn’t know much about Ultimate Frisbee, but I was very willing to learn. When I saw that it was at 8:00 A.M., I was a bit disheartened, but after the first few days, my mind was changed. I found that learning how to play, and the rules of ultimate frisbee was very interesting and fun to me. The concept of not being able to move, besides taking a single step, after catching a frisbee was a very new concept to me, and was very interesting. Also, not having a referee for the actual games was something that I’ve never heard of, and was very intriguing to me, but made sense once I started playing. I remember one time, playing for the first time on the court, it was very sporadic, but it was fun. The feeling of catching a frisbee flying through the air, and being able to score a point for your team, and having them congratulate you on the catch, was absolutely amazing. For the teaching portion, I think our group did a great job at explaining and demonstrating the drills and warm-ups. Teaching the drills, and playing a game as our final drill was very fun, and also it allowed me to look at both teams, and make sure they were understanding what were trying to teach. Overall, this entire class has been very enjoyable for me. Learning and playing the sport was very fun, and getting to meet other people was fun as well. I definitely improved in comparison to the beginning of the class. At first, I didn’t even know the proper way to throw a frisbee, and didn’t know there were multiple ways to throw it. I had fun in this class, and would highly recommend it to others if they do not know what activity course to take.
I am currently a senior and will be graduating in the fall. This class was one of the highlights of my UNCG career. Not only were you an amazing teacher, but I got to meet new people who share a similar love of frisbee to me. I want to kind of go over my personal history with Ultimate and how it ties into this class.
When I was younger, I first got into ultimate frisbee in middle school. My coach was the French teacher, and I had never heard of the sport prior to this. During the year I played there I was taught all the fundamentals and was able to improve basic throwing skills as well as "game knowledge." This is where I fell in love with frisbee. It is not hard to throw a disc, and once you get good at it, throwing frisbee is such a beautiful thing. I continued to play in high school on a less competitive level, more of a pickup type games with friends. Since then, I had yet to play ultimate. I still threw around while at the beach or at parks, but I forgot about my love of the game. Then I stumbled upon this course.
I didn't really know what to expect when signing up, was more just hoping to play games. I knew I would be one of the more experienced in the class, but was also hoping to re-ignite my love for ultimate and this class certainly did that. As I've gotten older I find myself enjoying things that are less active, and this class also made me appreciate being up and running around, even if it was at 8:00 in the morning. As follows is my personal reflections on each of the three sections in KIN 110-01.
1. Skills Development.
I am pretty good at throwing a disc. I can throw it far, accurate, and am able to place it well. However, I have never really had much of a forehand. During casual games, or at the middle school level, you don't really need to have that big of a skill set. If you have a good backhand you will shine. I think what brought me a lot of joy from this class was being able to throw a confident forehand. The warmup parts of the course where we were able to throw around, helped me to develop that skill in a non pressure situation which helped build my confidence. In the last game we played I placed a beautifully thrown forehand that led to a score and I was very proud of how far I have come with that. Before I would have never even thrown a forehand to a friend, let alone in a competitive setting.
2. The games and peer assessments were my favorite part of this course. I played a lot of sports in high school, and didn't realize how much I missed a team mentality and competitive setting. When the course started, there may have been two people in the class that could throw well, myself being one of them. However, over the course of the semester, it was cool to watch how much everyone had improved. At first you only really had to guard like four people, yet at the end, everyone was a threat. I loved seeing the progression of everyone in the class including my own.
3. While I didn't hate the teaching aspect, I did miss the games. I felt that it brought a bright spot to my day, and the teaching made class less fun to attend. Part of that was due to the fact I already had three different group projects this semester so that added to it, but I mostly just missed playing. However, it was fun to see the things everyone came up with.
All in all I had such a wonderful semester in this class. You are an incredible professor, who brings energy, a competitive spirit, and a light heartedness into the classroom. Your ability to not only teach but demonstrate skills to us made it much easier to learn. I have recommended this class to all of my friends and truly wish you the best. Keep up the good work. My only regret is that I cant take this class again.
Taking this Ultimate Frisbee class was really fun and helped me understand Ultimate frisbee. I used to think that Ultimate was more different then how i was learned in this class. I've never really watched the sport so I didn't understand how similar it was to a sport like football but I was able to differeciate them. My favorite unit was actually playing the game I would look forward to it every class. Although I wasn't the best thrower I felt like my defense and catching was very good. One thing I really never got was front hand throws so I really never attempted them in a game but I feel like if I had the confidence I would've. I would be able to teach this sport to someone teach this sport easily. I would say that it is pretty basic and if you play any sports at all that you could learn this fast. because I can say that I did . Didn't take me too much longer to catch on to the game and be able to play it without any problems. I love the fact that there are no referees in the sport and that Its based on the players.
It is safe to sat that throughout my time as a Kinesiology major, ultimate frisbee is my favorite activity course.
The organization of this course was my favorite part. We spent a lot of time honing our throwing skills before jumping right into a game. Developing our skills to play the game was a lot of fun. Although I initially struggled with trying to perfect my skills, I have gradually seen an improvement in my performance. The second part of the course was very interesting. I enjoyed that we had the opportunity to lead a class. Overall, I believe that the design of the course and the careful consideration given to each component made this course amazing.
I think that everything we learned will continue to be useful to me in my future. Having the opportunity to lead a class was a little stressful, but it only made me aware of all the aspects that go into teaching. Instruction will be (I hope) a major part of my future career as a physical therapist.
After I take an activity course, I make an effort to continue practicing the sport. As a result, I now own a frisbee, soccer ball, and volleyball. This course has taught me a lot, and I want to thank you for all the work you put into making it what it was.
Although I had to wake up at 6:30 three times a week, this Ultimate course has been my favorite class of this semester. I had minimal knowledge of ultimate from high school before attending this class, however a couple of classes into this course I realized I had so much more to learn. This included the various rules and the techniques such as the the hammer throw and the double teaming rule. Every class I learnt something new whether it be another rule or technique or how to teach a class. Each class, Mr. Lee would come motivated and excited which made class much more exciting. All the drills we'd learn before a game went hand in hand, learning a new technique and quickly applying it in a game. But after the focus of the class changed to teaching the class atmosphere changed. I was yet again met with an unfamiliar territory , it meant that I had to do lesson pans and prepare activities as a group. I was responsible for a class and quickly I learnt that how to apple what I learnt during the first half of the class to my teaching to show that I had really learnt ultimate, which was a great way to test my knowledge. On top of that we received great feedback from Mr. Lee so it mad it incredibly easy to improve our teaching skills. So thank you Mr. Lee, I had a great time being your student and I learnt a lot, you're a great teacher!
Overall, this course has been a fun way to start off my morning all semester. I am usually in very thinking intensive courses where we sit in a dark room at a desk and take notes/ examinations (i.e. Biochemistry, Physics, Analytical Chemistry, Calculus, etc.) and this is not always the best environment to maintain good mental health. Ultimate has been the perfect break from these thinking intensive courses. Being able to get up in the morning and move/ stretch my body with very little mental strain has helped improve my ability to think in my other classes and have improved my mental capacity. This semester in Ultimate we learned a variety of skills, such as throwing, catching, movements acceptable in game play, and warm up exercises. These experiences will be used outside of this course as I continue to exercise and stretch. Another important aspect of this course is team work, more specifically making decisions when needed, trusting your teammates, and working past mistakes/losses. As a veterinary technician, I am required to work as a team with my doctors, other technicians, and pet owners on a daily basis. I will carry these skills with me into my choses profession and allow them to make me an even better technician and when I become a doctor it will help me to be a better doctor.
I was unsure what to expect when I signed up for Kin 110 at the beginning of this semester. I had heard of ultimate frisbee before but had never played it and only thrown a frisbee a small amount of times throughout my life. I was a little skeptic at first because this course was 3 times a week and started at 8:00 am. I quickly learned that my decision to take this course was a good one. I had a great experience in kin 110 and it turned out to be my favorite physical activity course I have taken at UNCG. Many of the other physical activity courses I have taken are not very inclusive and everyone wants to get the course over with. This was not the case with Kin 110. From day one we played games and did activities that made everyone feel involved. Not only did I learn how to play ultimate frisbee in this course but I also learned things that will benefit me in the future. I learned teamwork and got more comfortable with going out of my comfort zone and making new friends. I really appreciated how professor Lee made this course enjoyable. It can be difficult to find the motivation to get out of bed for an activity course that early in the morning, but this was never the case for me while in this course. I enjoyed learning ultimate and was thankful to have a professor that truly cared about his students. I will leave this course with many new friends and many happy memories!
Ultimate Frisbee started as a class requirement and a supposed to be dreadful experience, but it wasn’t like that at all. In the beginning I was already doubting liking the class because I have a hard time in exercise classes due to my asthma being exercise reactive. Added to the fact that I had a knee injury from the previous semester that wasn’t quite a sealed as I thought it would be. However as I went to more classes and we stopped having to jog three laps around the court, I began to enjoy myself. I learned as the throws and although I really only like one, I have pride in knowing them. Even when my stomach was an issue or my knee, I didn’t let that take away my enjoyment for the class. Also this class being so early made sure I fixed my sleep schedule because I was not about to be zombie walking and get hit by a frisbee. Overall the skills and game learning part of the class was really enjoyable to me, and I have pride in knowing I can technically be called sporty now. Having us teach the class as a like what have you learned project is enjoyable as well, I like teaching and participating with my teammates as well as other classmates. Ultimate frisbee started as an obligation and now after I graduate, it will become a major hobby in my life. I already have a frisbee that I’m planning to use to teach my siblings how to play. This class has given me a sporty hobby I didn’t know about and I discovered a sport side of myself, that I didn’t know about. I’m going to miss the class as a whole, probably not he early wake up time but definitely the experiences this class created for me.
This semester in the Ultimate Frisbee class, I have enjoyed learning the rules of the game along with playing it. I thought that when learning how to throw the frisbee and play Ultimate, the instructor was very helpful in teaching us. I struggled with forward hand throw and the instructor helped me "perfect" the throw, this made my experience easier when I learned how to do this. The games were really fun, however, I did wish that I was able to receive the frisbee more often than I did. When I did not receive the disc, it made me feel excluded from the game or that I was not good enough to receive it. Regardless, I still enjoyed the game. I think that teaching the skills to our classmates has also been a great experience for us to get exposed to as Kinesiology majors. Creating these drills and instructing them is helpful for when we might want to teach other individuals how to play Ultimate. Now that I know the rules of the game and how to throw a frisbee, I have started to teach other friends of mine how to play and throw. It has been a fun time teaching them. I can't wait to continue to teach other friends of mine how to play Ultimate, because I really have learned how to play this semester!
I had a very fun experience in this class. It was my favorite class this semester. I remember at the beginning of the semester everyone was really bad at catching and throwing. Then at the end of the semester we were all trying different ways of throwing the frisbee and catching. We all loved playing the game. Learning everything we learned this semester will help me later because it taught me how to be a gym teacher. It actually sounded like fun. I had already come in with experience when I took the class. It was very easy for me to try and catch on to knew things. In the beginning I was struggling with the hammer throw but I got the hang of them and was able to throw some that were catchable. The skills part was very fun. The self/peer assessment was eye opening. My classmates were able to point out things to me that I didn't notice about myself. It helped me become a better player and feel more comfortable around my classmates. I loved playing against them. The teaching portions was very helpful. Recently I got a job at a summer camp as a gym teacher. I will use the skills I learned in that section of the class at my new job. I hope the people I teach enjoy my teaching as much as I have enjoyed yours.
Ultimate Frisbee was a sport that I never thought that I would end up liking. Before taking this class, I had only thrown a frisbee at the beach or at family gatherings. I didn't know much about the sport or even the rule that came along with the sport. In the beginning of the class, I thought oh, this is really easy, we're just throwing the frisbee back and forth to each other and completing warms up that are tiring but not difficult. As the class progressed I did started to believe that maybe ultimate was not as easy as I thought it was going to be. My experience with throwing forehand and backhand was pretty good but I did seem to struggle when throwing using the hammer method but once we practiced and practiced I think I got the hang of it. As we learned more and more about the different techniques and skills I also experienced some difficulty in incorporating the pivot and cuts. I tried my best to perform well and practice as much as possible to be able. When we took the performance exam I did seem to doubt myself because I didn't think that I was going to get all the frisbees in the goal in the short amount of time. When it came time to actually take the exam I put all the effort I could give and ended up receiving all the points possible.
After completing the exam we started the games which is where I especially liked playing just because we got to move around more and play with people we had not played with before. The spirit of the game was most of the basic rules that other sports have and the few that were specific to ultimate were easy to remember. I did enjoy the games but there were times where I felt intimidated by the other players especially the tall guys that were able to jump high in the air to catch the frisbee. The intimation that I felt was stronger when I noticed that they did not always throw it to you even though you were in an open space. Though I experienced this, that did not stop me from enjoying the game and putting all the effort.
When it came time to teach the class, my group and I were prepared tried to make the activities and warm ups as fun as possible. The one thing that we did have a hard time with was ensuring that we were staying within the time we had planned each part to be. For obvious reasons we could not stop the students in the middle of the activities but we tried to adjust as much as possible. Teaching was another part of ultimate frisbee that I enjoyed a lot because we got to see how well we could teach and how well other students understood our plan.
Afterall, learning how to throw, catch, spirit of the game rules and how to teach will allow me to be able to teach ultimate frisbee to other people that might want to learn how to play the correct way. Learning all these things myself "ultimate"ly lead me to enjoy "ultimate".
Thank you for being my instructor!
Honestly, I had a great time in this class. Through this class I have made some good friends and made some memories that I will not forget. Learning the game was really fun and I enjoyed playing games, talking with the other students, and even teaching to some degree. The drills we did as a class were fun and interesting. I really enjoyed the long distance throwing ones they were probably my favorite drills to do. Playing games would probably have to be my favorite thing about the class. I like competitiveness and the games were that and they were fun and enjoyable. I am glad that everyone abided by the spirit of the game and allowed us to have fun and fair games. Whether my team won or not I always enjoyed it and playing with my friends and even switching it up some was enjoyable. Overall I really enjoyed the class and it was probably my favorite class this semester. It was a great time being taught by you and I wished you were teaching it again because I would definitely recommend the class to other students if they needed an activity class to take. Thank you for the great semester and I hope you have a good summer.
Throughout this course I have been able to learn a new skill and a new activity. This course has taught me the importance of acquiring a new skill and also being able to teach it to other individuals. During this activity course I experienced fun moments and met some nice individuals within my major. I have been able to connect with some people who were in my other classes and learn what they want to do in the near future after their graduation. I have also experienced new ways to introduce an activity and a new skill. Some of the drills and games that we participated in during this course were different to me and I had never heard of them before. For example, during a couple of warm up sessions I had never participated in the activity where we stand in a circle and throw a flag up in the air and have to catch it while moving around in a circle. This activity allowed me to think more outside of the box when planning my own activities if I had to teach a group of people a new activity.
During class I began to experience some challenges of staying motivated and entertained during some days. Waking up at 8am has taken a toll on me. Due to me having a very heavy course load this semester and taking over 20 credit hours, I began to feel very drained. Waking up at 8am has had me very tired but I still managed to push through and do my best to make it to the class sessions. I had to learn how to better prioritize my time and most importantly my rest. This class has really allowed me to learn a new game and appreciate the process of learning with a group of people and improving my own skill in the game. Before taking this course I never played the game and didn't know much about it. I feel as though I learned a lot and had the opportunity to participate with a cool instructor. This has been one of the activity courses that I have taken that I actually enjoyed here at UNCG for the most part. By taking this class, I can now take the knowledge learned and apply that to my responsibilities and work outside of the university. I can learn new ways to teach other individuals and potentially play this game on my free time as a way to have fun.
Throughout the KIN110 course, I had the opportunity to learn and develop my skills in the sport of Ultimate. The course was divided into three sections, each with a different objective and rationale.
During the first section, we focused on skills development. We started each class by practicing plyometric movements and running laps, and then proceeded to learn various throwing and movement skills. The evaluation for this section was structured to ensure that we completed a certain set of tasks within a predetermined time frame. Through this section, I learned the importance of having a solid foundation of skills in any physical activity.
The second section focused on learning the rules of the game and enjoying playing. We learned basic rules such as court changes, traveling, and in/out. The most significant part of the rule was the spirit of the game, which is the heart of Ultimate. We were required to take an online rule test and create our own assessment rubric to evaluate ourselves and be assessed based on our standards. This section taught me the importance of understanding the core values of any sport and how to assess my own performance and others based on those values.
The final section was focused on teaching our peers in a group. This section taught me that teaching is a whole other level of skill that requires numerous considerations. As a good teacher, it is important to think about teaching rationales behind movements, constructing tasks by stages, and considering students in various ways. It was challenging because not everyone has the same spirit of the game or the same level of fitness when playing. Through this section, I was able to see Ultimate from a different perspective and gained a deeper understanding of the game.
Overall, my experience in the KIN110 course was challenging but rewarding. I learned the fundamental parts of Ultimate and was able to apply them through the different sections of the course. Not only I developed my skills in Ultimate, but I have also learned how to be a fair and ethical player, how to assess my performance, and how to teach others effectively. These skills will be valuable in any future endeavors, whether in sports or in other areas of life. Through reflecting on my experiences, I am excited to continue to grow in my understanding and application of Ultimate in the future. By completing this course, I can confidently say that I have learned Ultimate.
