Ultimate student teaching_Teaching is an effective strategy to learn betterTeaching class at UNCG/SP 23 KIN 110 2023. 4. 4. 22:45
Teaching is an effective way to learn better. Below are the two announcements that I sent to my students to explain the group teaching sessions.
Hello everyone,
Wishing you all is well with you during this beautiful season.
We have just completed the Game performance 1 test, and it's now time to move on to the next level. As this is the only Ultimate course at UNCG, it covers both basic and intermediate levels. Fortunately, intermediate in this course does not mean a higher level of physical competencies or skills. Instead, it means becoming a coach who teaches drills. As Kinesiology students, teaching is a fundamental part of our future professional work. This final step is designed to help you develop and exercise teaching and communication skills.
Below is the schedule for the next stage. It may seem complicated, but don't worry. As long as we spend our time wisely in class, it won't require you to spend additional time efforts.
The main point of this stage is to think more about Ultimate by teaching and assessing players from a coach's point of view. We will all be generous coaches and players for this stage, which means we want to use existing drills and have broad assessment methods. The comprehensive teaching manual (Download The comprehensive teaching manual) is attached in the table. The teaching plan format and example (Download The teaching plan format and example) are also uploaded. Two files include useful information that we can refer to in general. And I will be with you always throughout this process.
27th Mar (Mon) Form a team and role 3 groups of five or six members. 29th Mar (Wed) / 31st Mar (Fri) Study and prepare your part individually
(online: no in-person class)Refer to existing drills. 3rd Apr (Mon) Prepare and practice with team mates. Use 40 mins in total for your teaching. 5th Apr (Wed) Team A teaching Team A teaching plan(100p) 7th Apr (Fri) No class_Spring holiday 10th Apr (Mon) Team B teaching Team B teaching plan (100p) 12th Apr (Wed) Teach C teaching Team C teaching plan (100p) 14th Apr (Fri) No class 17th Apr (Mon) Team A teaching - assessment focused Team A will assess players (100p) 19th Apr (Wed) Team B teaching - assessment focused Team B will assess players (100p) 21st Apr (Fri) Teach C teaching - assessment focused Team C will assess players (100p) Let's talk about the next stage together in class. For this, we want to meet at the gym.
See you in class!
Mr. Lee
Hello all,
Thank you all for your teaching preparation. I am looking forward to seeing the first group teaching tomorrow. Upon the first group's preference, we will meet at the Rec field at the same time (8:00 am).
At this point, before the groups have started teaching, I would like to briefly describe my understanding of teaching. Teaching involves not only creating tasks or improving students' skills but closer to understanding and guiding students to grow with intentional purposes. Giving tasks for students to complete is an essential but basic step. The moment your behavior becomes teaching is when you consider "understanding and guiding students," "growth," and "intentional purpose." First, "understanding and guiding students" means that your students are more important than what you need or want to teach. You want to test the waters or read the room to understand what current students have and feel, which sometimes requires you to change or vary the tasks you have prepared. Without caring for your students, there won't be any difference to learning online by reading and practicing alone. Second, "growth" means that students learn differently. Even if teachers want to teach A, there is no way to make students learn exactly A. They will absorb A in different ways, such as A' or A'', based on their background and former experiences. This is connected to the last part, "intentional purpose." However individualized students' learning is, teaching does not solely depend on serendipity. Due to the characteristic of differentiated learning, there are some cases where teachers forget what the intention or purpose was. Teachers must hold a clear stick to guide students while embracing different learning outcomes.
Sorry for the lengthy email, but I wanted to share my perspective on teaching. I hope it helps to determine your teaching behaviors and attitudes. Now that we have prepared tasks, it is time to think about the details that can make your teaching more effective.
Please send me a teaching plan before your group teaching begins. See you tomorrow at Rec field.
Best,
Mr. Lee
